UBC Okanagan
Energy Studies & Strategic Energy Management Plan
SES has collaborated with UBC Okanagan on a variety of energy studies and implementation projects at their Kelowna campus including the FortisBC funded Building Optimization Program at five buildings with a primary focus on optimizing the efficient use of the geo-exchange heating loop. In 2016, SES delivered a whole-campus Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP) which recommended annual bundles of specific projects to meet their 2020 emission reduction target of 33% (over BAU). It also envisioned a long-term strategy for the organization to surpass its 2030 ambitions.

Simon Fraser University
South Sciences Retro-Commissioning
The South Sciences building is one of the most energy intensive buildings on the SFU Burnaby campus. With over 100 fume hoods in the Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry research and teaching labs, the air turnover rate required an excessive amount of energy to heat and cool the building. During the BC Hydro Continuous Optimization (COp) project, SES worked with SFU to optimize air balance and fan speeds. SES also engaged lab managers and professors through an in-depth survey to categorize each and every fume hood according to use. Automatic stand-by mode timers were implemented on less critical hoods helping save heating energy when the hoods were not in use. SSB realized a 20% reduction in electricity use and a 15% reduction in heating energy use as a result of the COp.

Capilano University
SES has played an integral role in Capilano University’s 2015 goal of reducing GHG emissions by 33%. Audits in four of their largest buildings demonstrated the need to replace aging control systems with a modern building automation system. By incorporating advanced strategies in the control of heating, cooling and ventilation systems, energy consumption has been significantly reduced.

BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology)
In partnership with BCIT, SES piloted its very first fully immersive project as part of the BC Hydro Continuous Optimization program. A team of engineers installed themselves on campus for a week to audit multiple buildings. Making use of agile methods the engineers were able to gain greater insight in to the building systems and use in a fraction of the normal time by working closely with facilities personnel and having access to materials and equipment on demand. SES also performed a lighting retrofit on a showcase building, and through that process developed a new lighting standard for BCIT. We continue to work in partnership with BCIT as we develop a long term energy strategy to reduce and emissions.
