I love promoting sustainability. Not so much promoting myself. So here’s a few things about me and my work.
I wrote in my grade 5 journal that I wanted to work protecting the environment and every step of my career has furthered me down that path. I have a BSc in Environmental Conservation Sciences with a major in Economics and Policy. I spent my early career in non-profit environmental education with a notable turn as Executive Director of the Elements Society. I joined SES in 2011 and picked up a Certified Energy Manager designation along the way. I’ve done it all. Waste reduction and recycling, water conservation, transportation, urban agriculture and renewable energy but my heart is always with energy and climate change.
I love designing sustainability programs. I love the complexity of how people make decisions and looking for the inflection point to nudge them towards greener options. I love the interdisciplinary nature of the sustainability puzzle; mixing technology, change management, economics, and behaviour. I’ve had the pleasure of developing the Destination Conservation program, Metro Vancouver’s Strata Energy Advisor program and the City of Edmonton’s Change for Climate Mobilizer program and I can’t wait to get started on my next project.
The hardest lesson I’ve learnt in 20 years of this work is that information doesn’t equal action. Lasting change starts with understanding people. This is why I continue to build up my public engagement muscles. I’m excited to be supporting clients to better understand their stakeholders and I want to help people express their ideas and values and help translate that into sustainability policies and programs.
The second hardest lesson I’ve learnt is I can’t do it all, but I can have a lot of fun bringing together a fantastic team that can. I really enjoy leading interdisciplinary teams and watching each person shine when they are doing their best work with their whole heart.
